Immediate steps

  • Record identifying details without entering an unsafe scene.
  • Keep every report, image, treatment record, and insurer contact.
  • Ask counsel promptly about preservation requests and potentially short-lived data.
02

Records and physical evidence

  • Carrier and vehicle identifiers
  • Driver and witness details
  • Electronic, inspection, cargo, and maintenance records
  • Medical and economic records

Electronic logging, telematics, dispatch, inspection, maintenance, cargo, and camera data can have different retention periods. A prompt, properly scoped preservation plan matters.

People, organizations, and insurance

The driver, motor carrier, tractor or trailer owner, shipper, broker, loader, maintenance provider, leasing company, employer, and electronic-system vendors may be distinct.

Commercial liability layers, cargo, trailer, employer, shipper, owner, and personal policies require policy-specific analysis; federal registration is not proof of coverage for a claim.
